description:
Lawrence is a traveling merchant who finds a 600 year old pagan deity/wolf girl named Horo in his wagon one night. She begins traveling with him, and her wisdom helps increase his profits. But her true nature draws unwanted attention from the church…
Based on a light novel series about the travels of a medieval merchant (Spice) who encounters and befriends a pagan harvest deity named Horo (Wolf). The story forgoes the traditional sword-&-sorcery adventure element to focus on how people lived and did business during the Middle Ages . The novel series (written by Isuna Hasekura) won the Silver Prize in the 12th Dengeki Novel Awards.

if you downscale sudo, it will still look better than the dvd. just less grain and less detail on dark scenes.
Comment by shiroh — October 28, 2008 @ 6:01 pm |
I love you work, but I’m going to stick with the HD upscales on this. I watched 2 episodes of your DVD rip, and no offence, but the HD had better colors, and much less grain. The DVD was sharper, but that’s not enough.
What’s I’m really dissapointed by, is actually the R2’s themselves. I downloaded an ISO of the first R2DVD, and the quality is not very good.

Just wondering, did you sub this yourself or did you use ayako’s or bss’ subs?

Scripts by sudo(ep. 1-6, 8-13) and BSS(ep. 7(aka ep. 6.5, DVD/BD-only))
Comment by Blanchimont — October 28, 2008 @ 6:55 pm |
To be very honest…
Your release uses a lot more bit rate than KAA and the quality isn’t that different at all.
If I look at the SS you used to compare the difference is so little while KAA did it with a lot smaller filesize and yes, I know they use ordered-chapters.
I hope you can accept a comment like that, just want to be honest.

Nice release, have niizk ever considered doing Fate – Stay night DVD-rips or is there a chance of doing them, just really wanted to ask-))
Comment by Sovran — October 28, 2008 @ 8:21 pm |
I also request a Fate / Stay night release. =)
Comment by mflatischler — October 28, 2008 @ 11:12 pm |
tweekie: r2 dvds suffer from aliasing throughout, which is the reason why some antialiasing was run on it, and also the reason why the kaa – niizk comparison was made.
kaa’s encodes are fine as they are, especially for the small size. i just hated the aliasing issue being completely left alone which is incredibly fugly in motion.
there’s more grain retention in niizk though, due to the higher bitrate. if it’s needed for real _for you_ is another question though. not that dvd5s are a matter of being expensive.
your honest opinion is fine as you did that decision for yourself.
rekn1t, sovran: no sources are present for us, and r1 choice would be probably bad.

AA is teh win.
Comment by shiroh — October 29, 2008 @ 4:29 am |
Thanks – worth the extra size for me over the KAA version and also a little better than the HDTV versions.
Comment by Babel — October 29, 2008 @ 6:33 am |
The difference between sudo and niizk is pretty obvious and once more proves that HD resolution isn’t everything.
The difference between KAA und niizk is very subtle in these screenshots. Are these really good examples anyway? If I look closely though I must say I really prefer the sharper look of KAA’s encode here. The minor aliasing is usually lost when scaling to fullscreen. Also it looks as if despite this the halos in niizk’s encode stand out more. Look at the bright triangle-like areas above the guy’s eyes.
Such halos get on my eyes and nerves pretty fast because it looks like ghosting and confuses the eyes’ sense of sharpness. It probably doesn’t matter until you notice though. However, once it has been mentioned, you’ll always notice halos.
Well, I think it’s a real pity that the original DVDs look worse than a slightly filtered reencode.

this release has a big advantage over kaa, it’s complete. the rest is taste, as they are all good (niizk, kaa, sudo) and have their good and bad points. i personally like higher resolution and less grain so the sudo version is the one for me. the best possible version would be hd with a low grain amount BUT with the details of the dvd, which is clearly superior in this regard to the tv-version. thank you for the best dvd-encode!
Comment by fan — October 29, 2008 @ 6:16 pm |
You dare compare niizk to KAA? EVERY ONE of KAA encode is crap. Over-smoothing, banding, blocking, detail loss, and so much more. I can encode better releases than KAA in my sleep. You can’t tell from the picture, I guarantee its there. The ONLY encodes that compare to niizk are those done by Anon32, cestfait, or HD encodes from THORA/PSNR.
Comment by AXT — October 30, 2008 @ 12:46 am |
please don’t be a troll, kaa is far from crap. i’m glad they released their oversmoothed versions of tokyo godfathers, spirited away and totoro because i can’t watch the same niizk releases for too long before my eyes hurt from the preserved noise/grain. they look great on pictures but in motion a lot of people seem to dislike lots of noise/grain. i love the older niizk encodes with their low level of noise/grain (akira, mononoke hime, nausicaa rev 1, kiki’s delivery service, whisper of the heart).
Comment by fan — October 30, 2008 @ 6:18 am |
Preserving grain and noise is certainly more a question of taste than quality. Most of the time I prefer a bit grain and noise if it suits the anime. Clean anime always feels a bit more cold and stiff. That said, the amount of noise in Totoro surprised me, too. However, if you don’t like it, hqdn3d or similar filters remove it during playback which takes very little CPU especially if it’s not HD. That way you can fine-tune it to your personal preferences.

Thank you for the release, finally finished downloading and i noticed that Sudo just released ep 7, are you going to re-release ep 7 with there script or keep bss’s?
Comment by Silverbassist — November 1, 2008 @ 5:59 am |

Comment by KAA fanboi — November 1, 2008 @ 5:20 pm |
@ KAA fanboi, to answer your question…no. However, despite the quality complaints, KAA has a lot of releases you will not find anywhere else. On the flip side, you cannot rush perfection.
